The highly anticipated sequel is already the top-grossing movie of 2024 – and the milestones keep on coming.
Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has broken yet another record: becoming the first ever animated movie to gross over $1 billion (€894.3 million) at the international box office.
Inside Out 2 crossed the $1 billion mark after bringing in another $9.1 million (€8.1 million) internationally this weekend, Hollywood news site Deadline reports.
The coming-of-age film is one of just 12 films – and the sole animated movie – to ever cross that prized threshold. Other films in that exclusive club include Avatar (and its sequel Avatar: The Way of Water), Titanic, Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens.
Though those kinds of numbers mean more or less global success, the top foreign markets for Inside Out 2 have been Mexico ($102.2m/€91.4m), Brazil ($80m/€71.5m), the U.K. ($72.7m/€65m), France ($62.6m/€56m) and Korea ($60.8m/€54.4m).
According to BoxOfficeMojo, which tracks box-office revenue, the hit film has also raked in $646.3 million (€578m) in US cinemas alone.
Inside Out 2 officially became the highest-grossing animated film of all time back in July 2024. It overtook Frozen II, which had held the record since 2019.
The sequel to Pixar’s critically and commercially successful 2015 film, Inside Out 2 continues the story of young girl Riley as she enters high school and how that impacts the anthropomorphised versions of her emotions, played by a host of star actors including Amy Poehler, Maya Hawke, and Ayo Edebiri.
